Web 3.0 - Reality??

One of the more interesting readings for me this week was the article from the New York Times entitled, "Entrepreneurs See a Web Guided by Common Sense". It brought to light the idea of Web 3.0 - one that I didn't even realize was a thought in someone's brain up until now.

I'm still grasping the idea of Web 2.0 - so the idea that someone has already started dreaming up Web 3.0 is a sign that technology will continue to get better and better, and you just need to jump on board the train before it passes you by.

So here's my thought - if Web 2.0 is the Web of today, do we really want Web 3.0 to replace it?? Here's an example of what Web 3.0 offers that Web 2.0 doesn't:

A person wants to map out a trip and see where there are restaurants along the way.

In Web 2.0 land you could use a program such as Google Maps to map out your trip and it would map out the restaurants along the way so that you can make the decision as to where to stop. It will give you the names of the restaurants and in some cases it will even give you the telephone number.

In Web 3.0 land you could punch in your trip, your likes and dislikes in food, your price range preference, and the application would only display the best matches to your selection.

So my thought is - is that too easy?? I mean, you never know what you are going to want on the road that far in advance - do you want an application to be that smart??

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of this Web 3.o. I would think that in simple applications it could be an improvement. But it also makes you wonder where the mom & pop shops of the world will be left high and dry because the more recognized names would rate high on a scale.
